Description : Duration: | 5D4N | Description: | DAY ONE (Sandakan/Sepilok/Sukau Rainforest Lodge) On arrival at Sandakan Airport by MH2042 at 7:40 a.m., transfer to Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre. Trek ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden plank walks to witness the feeding of the Orang Utans at 10:00 a.m. Continue to Sandakan jetty for an estimated two hours boat journey to Sukau Rainforest Lodge along Sabah’s longest river, Kinabatangan with opportunity to view birds and wildlife in virgin mangrove, wetland and rainforest habitats. Late afternoon take a two hours river cruise using electric motor in search of some of the ten primate species including Proboscis Monkeys as they settle down on treetops along the Kinabatangan River. Return for solar heated hot shower, candle light dinner and slide show conducted by naturalist guide. Overnight at Sukau Rainforest Lodge. (L/D)
DAY TWO (Sukau) Wake up to the calls of gibbons and hornbills. A 6:00 morning river cruise up the Kinabatangan River to view more birds and wildlife. Proceed to the Kelenanap ox-bow lake for a short jungle walk (if weather permits). Experience the wilderness of Borneo. You have the option to participate in our conservation project by planting trees at our 64 acres adopted land. After breakfast, transfer by boat to Sukau Village for a short tour. In the afternoon, we proceed for another river cruise for more wildlife. After dinner and optional night safari cruise spotting nocturnal animals, crocodiles and birds. Overnight at Sukau Rainforest Lodge. (B/L/D)
DAY THREE (Sukau/Gomantong/Borneo Rainforest Lodge) Proceed 27km overland to Gomantong Caves. Trek 20 minutes through the rainforest to the cave entrance. Your guide will brief you on the cave faunas including bats, swiftlets and crabs among others and their contribution to maintain a balanced ecology and significance to the local economy. When in season, witness the collecting of bird’s nests by the local people using bamboo ladders and poles. Proceed for 2 1/2 hours drive to the town of Lahad Datu for lunch. Will be picked up by Borneo Nature Tours naturalist to travel on gravel road into the Danum Valley Conservation Area. You will be traveling through selectively logged forest passing through research, reforestation and experimental plantation plots of native commercial trees, teak, cocoa and acacia mangium in various stages of growth to reach the Borneo Rainforest Lodge, 83km away. The Borneo Rainforest Lodge is located beside the Danum Valley River on the edge of the 438 sq. km of pristine tropical lowland dipterocarp rainforest. Danum Valley is a sanctuary for the primate Orang Utan in their natural habitat and home to more than 290 species of birds. Bearded wild boars wander close, a litany of insects are regular sights and huge wild Asian Elephants on the road, there are also clouded leopards, Bulwer’s pheasants among the fauna of the Valley. Explore Natural Trails of undisturbed riverine forest. Our Naturalist will lead you on a journey of nature interpretation of the dense thick forest. In the evening enjoy a slide presentation and weather permitting to go on a night drive in an open vehicle looking out for nocturnal animals such as the Flying Lemurs, Western Tarsiers and sleeping Borneo Hornbills high up on the trees. DAY FOUR (Borneo Rainforest Lodge) Wake up to the sound of the rushing river and early morning animal calls especially the Gibbons and the Hornbills. Before breakfast, walk to the 107m long Canopy Walkway 27m above the ground among tall ‘Mengaris’ and mighty ‘Majau’ trees along with your binoculars to catch glimpses of birds flying by and sights of ‘Orang Utan’ or their nests and other animals living on the treetops. After breakfast, spend the whole morning exploring and trekking in the forest with our naturalists leading up to an escarpment trail to an ancient ‘Kadazandusun’ burial site for an insight into a brief understanding of the cultural background of the early people of the area. Trek back bypassing a waterfall for a refreshing dip in the rock pools. Lunch at the Lodge. In the afternoon, more trekking or go tubing at the Danum River. Weather permitting, enjoy night guided walk. Overnight at Borneo Rainforest Lodge. (B/L/D)
DAY FIVE (Borneo Rainforest Lodge/Lahad Datu) While having breakfast, morning appreciation of the view and animal sounds or orchestra from the thick virgin forests across the river. Enjoy the feeling of solitude and oneness with nature in deep virgin forest. Ample opportunities to take photographs with more trekking into the forest on well-marked self-guided nature trail. Return to the Lodge for lunch before departing for Lahad Datu at 1:30 p.m. to catch the last flight D72111, ETD : 4:30 p.m. to Kota Kinabalu International Airport. (B/L)
